"At that point, I wanted to do a Dylan song because I had been a fan for a long time," Costello says. "I was trying to think of something that would suit what I was doing. I was going for a soul thing, and that sort of beat came into my mind.
"I was thinking about the kind of stuff that Levon did with The Band. We went for one of their vaguely funky kind of beats. I think of it as a slightly slower version of something they would do."
