Scientists aglow over drug for radiation poisoning

With the Starship Enterprise seemingly doomed after losing warp power, Mr. Spock exposes himself to lethal radiation in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. After repairing the engines and saving the day, Spock dies.

Evidently, the movie's writers didn't think scientists would find a drug to cure radiation poisoning by the late 23rd century.

Yet local scientists may be on the verge of doing just that more than two centuries before the setting of the Star Trek film.

Rice University's Jim Tour and his colleagues at two Houston health institutions have found a drug that, when given to mice before radiation exposure, is 5,000 times more effective than the best-available therapy for radiation injuries.

Officials at the Department of Defense, seeking remedies for the radiation sickness that would follow a nuclear strike, were so taken by the research that they recently gave Tour a $540,000 grant and asked him to compress the next phase of testing into an almost unheard-of nine months.

Rade Prica provides shot in the arm to bring relief for Sunderland

On a fine night for unheralded heroes at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland clambered out of the relegation zone courtesy of two players still to establish themselves as household names anywhere other than their own homes. Daryl Murphy and Rade Prica slip from the memory more readily than they slip off the tongue, but the goals they plundered could hardly have been more vital.

Three delicious points not only lifted Roy Keane’s team away from immediate peril and into fourteenth place, they left Birmingham City spluttering in their wake. On this evidence, the task facing Alex McLeish at St Andrew’s is anything but straightforward. City, who have not won any of their past six matches in all competitions, were devoid of confidence and inspiration.

Keane has struggled to attract established players to his club — Robbie Savage, Matt Taylor and Stephen Hunt have all been targeted and failed to appear — but on this occasion the lesser figures proved inspirational.

Will anti-racists cheer for Obama?

I wonder what Lee Jasper, Ken Livingstone's big-mouthed race equality adviser, really makes of the idea of Barack Obama being president of the United States. Really makes of it, deep down inside. I wonder, too, what the Muslim Council of Britain feels about the prospect. Or anyone else who owes their position on the public stage to vociferous campaigning against racism.

I am sure that all of them would tell you that they would welcome such an outcome. America with its first black president! How wonderful! I am equally sure that the truth is rather different.

To help you understand why, I am going to try and answer what appears to be a very different question. What is Bill Clinton up to?

Over the past fortnight the former President has been stumping hard for his wife.

For rookies, USHL is an education like no other

Maybe they were embarrassed when they tripped the night a scout was watching.Lincoln rookie Jared Festler recalls his first shift of the regular season as a huge eye-opener. Yes, a league newbie learns quickly that no matter how good you thought the league you played in before was — it wasn't. Every player in the USHL was an all-star on their last team."In high school I'd be able to skate end-to-end and score by myself, but you would never be able to do that in this league," said Tyler Kieffer, just before the rookie was traded by Lincoln to Everett (Wash.) of the Western Hockey League. For many, the USHL is their first taste of the demands of the real world. One night, you've scored two goals and are singing country tunes with your buddies, and the next, the coach is telling you to clean out your locker. But should you survive the rigors of the league, the rewards are great.

Across the Universe: 2-Disc Deluxe Edition (2008)

As a delivery system for injecting a new generation with Beatles music, Across the Universe is efficient as well as playful and ferocious — much like the Fab Four themselves. The movie is almost an opera: plot primarily conveyed through song. And while Universe's thin 1960s-era romance never achieves the emotional complexity of even so ''simple'' a song as ''All My Loving,'' the film sure knows how to present that melody with an energy and visual invention that make you adore the tune all the more.

We TV fans already knew that Universe's female lead, Evan Rachel Wood, had a beautiful voice from the few times she sang on the ABC series Once and Again. The rest of the lesser-known cast, meanwhile — particularly Wood's romantic interest, played by Jim Sturgess — have expressive instruments that only occasionally succumb to the Broadway-style belting that characterizes so many movie musicals.

Tune, Cheruiyot take marathon wins, national half marathon titles for ...

Cheruiyot, a two time winner, took his third Houston win in four years, clocking 2:12:32. Kasime Adilo of Ethiopia was 2:12:53.

National Half Marathon titles for Carney, O'Neill

Carney's time of 1:02:21 earned him his first USA championship win while O'Neill also won her first national title in 1:11:57. The men's and women's championships were hosted for the second consecutive year by the Aramco Houston Half Marathon.

Though the 36th annual event started under ideal conditions with clear skies and a temperature of 48 degrees, the leaders passed the first mile in a relaxed 5:05 before Carney, Jason Lehmkuhle, and Ryan Kirkpatrick took charge of the field, leading the field through the second mile in 4:33.

The trio gradually extended a lead over the chase pack that included two-time champion Dan Browne and Steve Sundell.
