Mitt Romney Campaign Postmortem
The collapse of Mitt Romney's bid for the presidency brings the inevitable question: What went wrong? Michael Luo gives a pretty good explanation. If Mr. Romney's campaign were condensed to one of his trademark PowerPoint presentations, it would have had all the bullet points foretelling success: a multimillionaire candidate willing to relinquish his fortune to run, an unsettled Republican field and a candidate whose championing of conservative positions could motivate the party's base. Yet Mr. Romney's advisers acknowledged Thursday an array of tactical missteps and miscalculations. Perhaps most significantly, they conceded that they had failed to overcome doubts about Mr. Romney's authenticity as they sought to position him as the most electable conservative in the race, a jarring contrast to his more moderate record as governor of Massachusetts.
Counties launch social services hot line
Beginning today, anyone in the Bay Area who needs help with food, housing, employment or health care can simply dial 211. The three-digit hot line began operating in San Francisco nearly two years ago. Since then, six other Bay Area counties -- Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Santa Clara and Solano -- have been in various stages of operation. As of this morning, the service is officially up and running throughout the seven-county region. In Contra Costa County, 211 has operated in test mode until today. Still, operators at the Contra Costa Crisis Center have been fielding hundreds of calls a month. "Near Concord? OK, let's see, hmm," specialist Minerva Blaine told a caller Friday, scrolling through a computer database to find affordable housing units for the homeless mother of a new baby.
Police looking for two men in killing at Detroit cleaners
The Detroit Police Department is continuing to search for two men wanted for a fatal shooting at a dry cleaning business Wednesday. The 58 years old victim and his wife were inside the dry cleaners in the 17500 block of James Couzens about 2:30 p.m. when both men entered and announced a robbery. One of the men approached the wife to take her purse. The victim attempted to defend his wife and was shot, dying from his injuries. .
State’s Suhey gives CM girls trouble
Suhey also recorded a double-double, adding 14 rebounds to go with her 34 points. Meanwhile, Central Mountain received an outstanding performance from Mallory Moore who tossed in 23 points and Emily Williams 13. As a team, the Lady Wildcats canned 20-of-50 shots for a decent 40 percent. “We struggle when we don't shoot well," Gentzel explained. “But we did show a lot of fight. There was no excuses, but I will admit five games made it one tough week. The challenge was to play our game, and the kids responded well. They fought hard, and now it's time to rest and get healthy for the playoffs. That's big because Brandt has had the flu, but (tonight) she sucked it up and I was pleased with her effort. It's the same with the rest of the team. Now we can rest up for a couple of days before we have to prepare for the same teams and watch some film and see what we have to do." Central Mountain won the battle of the boards 37-34, with Lauren Dwyer and Courtney Walsh grabbing 10 caroms each while Suhey's 14 rebounds paced the Lady Little Lions.

Two weeks later the draft notice arrived and a few weeks after that Jim left for the Army.I was alone back here in Iowa, but the love in our hearts was strengthened with each lonely day that passed.After six months apart we were back together living in Texas to finish out his military time.
