On Show 2004

The last four months of every year are jam-packed full of the latest cycling bikes, frames, parts and widgets, all rolled out and shown off at the main trade-shows of the year. Eurobike, EICMA, and especially Interbike, all attract the cycling world like bees to a honey-pot, with the major companies keeping their next-year's products tightly under wraps until at least one of these shows.

As we do every year, Cyclingnews will have our reporters scouring the aisles of the shows on the lookout for the newest, best, shiniest and silliest products on display. Photographs, reports, and even a few interviews are in store, so keep your eyes peeled, and your bank-managers at the ready, as we go On Show for 2004.

Show dates

Eurobike Friedrichshafen: Sept 2-5
EICMA Milano: Sept 17-20
International Cycle Show UK: Sept 23-26
Interbike Las Vegas: Oct 4-8
Bicycling Australia show: Oct 20-24
Japan International Cycle Show: Nov 19-21

Apple - it's about iMacs not iPhones

I also find the mature OS X (10.4 Tiger version) to be excellent, as I'm sure Leopard (10.5) will prove to be when it's updated in the next few weeks. However, I'll be considering a PC desktop as my next computer purchase.

Apple make great computers & have the best, most intuitive OS (also virus-free) available today, but their consumer desktop models are relatively niche. If you want an upgradeable desktop Mac, Apple offers nothing but the Mac Pro at over £2,000 (with decent monitor). I think that the limited choice of Mac hardware is a significant obstacle to many more people switching over from PC.

Surcharges spur energy efficiency

The Globe has decided to resurrect the old African-American "welfare queen" canard on the latest home mortgage crisis ("Broker's clients detail web of dashed dreams," Jan. 20).

I see it as an outrageous exploitation by the rich and powerful of the poor, mostly African-Americans, and other minorities and their communities.

Did you know that African-Americans and other minorities who do honestly qualify for a mortgage generally pay more? BWB. Borrowing While Black.

This same criminally inflated real estate bubble happened 20 years ago and caused the collapse of the savings and loan industry. But instead of this experience informing the politicians, who raked in the campaign contributions, or the media, who lapped up the advertising dollars, it only informed the criminal conspirators, who were more brazen this time than the last, making bad loans to desperate working people who lost confidence in the rental market.

Lubavitch Chabad defers its dream

For months, people living near the southwest corner of Clark and Chestnut wondered about the hole in the ground. The owner, Lubavitch Chabad, planned a Center for Jewish Life on the site, but couldn't raise the money.

Apparently deferring its dream of a new building, the organization has a tentative agreement to sell the property to Chicago-based LG Development Group. Ariel Weissberg, attorney for Lubavitch Chabad, said LG wants to build a 15- to 20-story condo building with just two high-end units per floor. The Chabad, he said, may look at other sites to build a spiritual sanctuary.

The property is part of a planned development that requires any developer to obtain the consent of neighbors before building. Talks are under way, Weissberg said, noting that downtown Ald.

Unconvincing victory over Italy will do little to calm fans’ fears

Nine days ago, England would have lost that match. Their composure would have gone, they would have folded and they would have subsided to their first defeat to the Italians.

That was the analysis of Brian Ashton, the England head coach. Contrary, surely, to pretty much everyone else in the stadium or in front of their televisions, he reported that he did not at any stage sit there thinking: "Jesus Christ, we’re going to throw this one away."

Others may need more evidence, but Ashton’s point is that England are on a progress curve. From nine days ago against Wales, they have found an inner metal, a composure and a steeliness in defence. Nine days ago, they lacked that and lost; yesterday that element of mental tenacity was the difference. "It’s pretty well documented that we folded last week," he said, "and I don’t think we did this time.
