McCain's CPAC Suck-up
There are similar Disqualifying Statements in politics, words that will extinguish your enthusiasm for a candidate at the very moment when you are ready to swoon for him (or her). Here's one of those words: "Hagel." As in: Barack Obama has often said he'd consider putting Repbulicans in his cabinet and even bandied about names like Sens. Dick Lugar and Chuck Hagel. Forget that this is a cliche appeal to hack Washington bipartisanism, that Sen. Hagel's reputation seems to have been built on the substitution of good looks and agonizing passion for coherent, articulated thought, that the press mainly loves him because he's always ready to go on television and stab his party in the back. Why would you promote Hagel at the very moment when his prediction that the Surge was "the most dangerous foreign policy blunder in this country since Vietnam" appears to have been humiliatingly wrong? Disastrously wrong, potentially, if it had been heeded.
Yzerman named Canada's GM for Worlds
After a gold medal-winning performance at the IIHF World Championship last year, Hockey Canada is bringing Steve Yzerman back for another successful run on home ice. Yzerman was named Team Canada's general manager for the second straight year on Monday in Halifax, the co-hosting city for the tournament. Joining him on the management team are former Dallas Star general manager Doug Armstrong and former NHLer Luc Robitaille. "Working with Hockey Canada and their staff for the world championship last year was a terrific experience, and I am very pleased to be given the opportunity to return," Yzerman said in a statement on Monday. "Over the coming months, myself, Doug and Luc will be looking to name a coaching staff and players that will give Canada the best chance to defend their gold medal in Quebec City in May." .
Myrtle Beach offers many off-season delights, including temperate ...
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- At 7:45, the rising sun had barely cleared the gray Atlantic horizon, but the thermometer on our condo balcony registered a balmy 68 degrees. Looking down from six stories above the wide white beach that extended miles in either direction, I spotted a school of maybe 20 wet-suited surfers circling slowly beyond the break line, waiting for the next long wave to come rolling in. Feeling a surge, seven started stroking to the beach. Finding sufficient momentum, three popped to their feet and mounted the breaking swell. One caught the curl perfectly and got a 15-second thrill ride all the way to the beach for her trouble. Not too shabby for mid-December. North America's Atlantic coastline from the North Carolina-South Carolina border south to Winyah Bay is collectively known as the Grand Strand, a broad, largely unbroken crescent of white sand stretching some 60 miles.
The life and Times of Marie Benoit
He is forever helpful and kind and long-suffering and drops everything to come to my aid. And yes, sometimes he performs minor miracles as well. My windscreen had to be changed this time round. It had a small crack which, ironically enough, was not inflicted by me but by another mechanics shop years ago. I did not realise that they had dropped a spanner or whatever on it and cracked it until days later. I am hardly the sort to spit and polish my car and look at it with love every morning. As long as it functions I am happy. So, I went to one of those car people down from the office and he said that it would cost me Lm35 for the windscreen to be fixed. I would have to purchase a windscreen as well. Now my old Fiat has an old-type windscreen and not the new and apparently more complicated variety.
Saints 2-3 QPR
The QPR keeper's ball out was then intercepted and Saints found themselves with three players in behind and just Camp to beat. Jason Euell had the ball on the right and quickly squared to Stern John who just had to side foot home from the penalty spot but skied his effort so far over the bar. Camp was in action again three minutes later when he palmed away Andrew Davies' header from a corner. And predictably Saints were made to pay for their wastefulness when QPR equalised on 38 minutes. Rowan Vine charged past several despairing tackles and fed in Rowlands who finished low past the advancing Davis inside the area for 1-1. And it got worse just before half time when QPR took the lead. Damien Delaney put in a deep cross from the right, Patrick Agyemang had peeled off to the far post and in behind left back Jermaine Wright and side footed low past Davis from the edge of six yard box for 2-1.
A popular acne drug may raise cholesterol levels.
People who take the acne drug Accutane (isoretinoin), may be at risk for high cholesterol. Researchers from the University of California, San Franscisco, looked at the blood tests of almost 13,772 patients who took the drug between 1995 and 2002. Looking closely at those who had normal blood tests before taking the drug, the researchers noted that 44 percent developed high triglycerides, 31 percent developed high cholesterol and 11 percent developed high liver enzymes while taking Accutane. While Roche, the maker of Accutane, does warn patients that the drug may cause increased triglycerides, cholesterol and liver enzymes, this is the first study to show how significantly blood levels of these elements change. The study found that blood tests tend to go back to normal once patients stop taking the drug.
