Ghosts, legends, defunct companies

Welcome, readers, to our first ever Halloween-flavored installment of Ask the Readers.

Once again, I'm turning to you for hard-to-find answers to questions I've received. Some are pretty routine -- apple shopping, dish washing, pie baking -- but some are downright weird! We've got a ghost, a violet ray machine, a spooky house and a Monkey Man.

If you, or your fellow readers, can answer these questions we'll be in for a spooky column next week, just in time for Halloween. (See the end of the column for details about sending in your answers.)

Q: Does anyone know anything about the possible haunting of Valentine House, halfway between Rocky Mount and Ferrum? There was only a pile of bricks there where the house used to stand when I was a kid in the '60s.

Keep Unborn Baby Healthy: Dos and Don'ts

Although there is no way to guarantee that your baby will be born 100 percent healthy, expecting mothers can take certain steps to reduce the risk of some physical and intellectual abnormalities.

The National Women's Health Information Center and AVSC International, an organization that promotes reproductive health care worldwide, give some tips for pregnant women: Visit a health-care provider in the first trimester of your pregnancy, and then at regular intervals until you give birth.

Contact your insurance provider or, if you don't have one, contact your local family or social services for health insurance options.

Eat healthy foods. Your doctor may instruct you with some specific nutrition guidelines.

Get regular physical activity.

Neal's blog

This year's Super Bowl featured the classy and successful Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy. Society appears to be making progress. However, it is clear other barriers still exist in sports and society in general. This great country offers freedoms and protections to minorities, ignoramuses and bigots alike. However, the people also have the power to hold you responsible for hateful actions. For those who spew hatred and discontent, please understand you will be judged by the content of your character. I still have a dream. Do you? Thank you for taking the time to read this entry. Please feel free to voice your opinion by commenting. For some truly diverse and insightful opinions check out the great entries written by those on my friends list. .
