Jon Mark Beilue: Gift cards will stop the insanity

Experience is a great teacher, and experience taught me to give up when trying to surprise someone like my wife with a Christmas/birthday/anniversary gift. If I'm told the store, the aisle, the table, the color, the sales associate, the brand - and it's written down - it's even money I'll get it right.

If I strike out on my own for that something that's a surprise and they like it, it's an absolute fluke if they do. Such as a very recent birthday when I bought a jewelry box from Penney's for my wife because (a) it would have been perfect on the dresser, and (b) it was the first thing I saw in a nice display when I walked in the store.

"Would it hurt your feelings if I took this back and..."

No, not at all. In fact, it just reaffirmed I should have bought a gift card in the first place so you could go and shop and take your time and find the perfect item.

Transfer deadline day: 9am-1.30pm

That dressing gown cord has been loosened from my neck and thrown jubilantly out of the window at the heart-stoppingly joyous news that, as Andy Reid prepares to sign for Sunderland, part of the deal means Charlton get Essex underachiever and 'utility' misfit Greg Halford! I'm already wetting myself in anticipation of his not fitting in!" And you got £4m for Reid too, which should come in handy when you need to bribe someone to take Greg off your hands.

11.57am: "In response to Mr McKerr's slander (10.06am), I have never claimed such transfers as Thierry Henry and Didier Drogba," says Jimmy McManners. "And my Dad did mutter 'tosser' under his breath upon receiving it from David Ccameron." Ah, but he didn't have to take it, did he? "I can, however, exclusively reveal that Keegan has a verbal agreement with Shaun Wright-Phillips to come to the Toon.

Smith: Nothin' but (Inter)Net

I think I fit well," he said. "It's the Dwyane-Shaq type of team. You've got a post-up guy and a pick-and-roll guy."

T.J. Ford and Chris Bosh as Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O'Neal? A stretch to be sure. The two Raptors haven't won a playoff series yet, let alone an NBA championship. And we're not even going to talk about marketing and fame.

But Kapono does bring up an interesting point. As a shooter, he played in Miami with two of the very best at giving him space to operate and that's what he hopes will happen with his new team.

"There's lot of high pick and rolls, Jose (Calderon) and T.J. can get those; Chris is more of a face-up guy (than Shaq) but it's the same thing, it's all about spacing.

"You have to understand how to create space, let a guy make a move, and ...

Missing the kids, but not the job and all its ups and downs of the first semester.

Amy is started on her new project, with her co-workers family. She needs some help, so go read and see if the name is familiar...

Mommy Dearest is still trying to get in the groove of being back off vacation. Doing all the stuff, one has to straighten out as well as going back to work.

Dale Jr. completes NASCAR's perfect start

No shootout winner has gone on to win the Daytona 500 that season since Dale Jarrett did it in 2000. Also, let's not forget that Saturday's race featured only 23 cars for 70 laps. Among those not eligible for the race since they didn't win a pole last year or have never won this race were: Defending Daytona 500 champ Kevin Harvick, Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch and Jeff Burton, among others.

Still, Earnhardt's perforamce was impressive. So what did we learn from Saturday night?

1. These guys can drive these cars.

No doubt these cars don't handle as well. It will be interseting to see what happens with a 43-car field but the worries about a chaotic race went unfulfilled. There was a four-car crash but you're going to have that in restrictor-plate race.

Assault at HRC Store

Sgt. Brett Parson, head of the Washington Metropolitan Police Department's special liaison units, including the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit (GLLU), and the Human Rights Campaign have confirmed a report that the HRC Corner Store and Action Center at 1633 Connecticut Ave. NW was robbed around 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18. An unnamed 23-year-old male working in the store was assaulted during the robbery, which netted approximately $400.

Parson says the victim was pistol-whipped, suffering cuts and bruises to head, for which he was treated and released.

Parson described the suspect as a black male in his mid 20s to early 30s, about 5'4'', 135 pounds, with a light complexion, clean-shaven, with minor acne scars on his chin. At the time of the robbery, the assailant was wearing a dark-green knit hat; a long, puffy black coat; black dress pants; and a tie.
