Men grow beards for Ohio contest honoring president

Ray Blinn, 60, is growing his very first beard for the contest.

"Too bad they don't have the scruffy, mountain-man category, because that's probably going to be what I look like," Blinn said.

There will not only be a prize for the best resemblance to Hayes, but also others in categories including longest, neatest and most unusual beards.

Alicia looks good, and Nelly seems a bit old.

Really like Beyonce's new hair... finally a style thats a bit different, young and sexy... I think the dress suits her but I can't stand that ice/baby blue color...

Not feeling a lot of the outfits.. they're all a bit to colorful and gathered in the wrong places...!

.

Three weeks until it begins anew

It's only January, but two early frontrunners for my top 10 CDs of 2008 were releases this week from two Georgia-based bands: The Whigs' Mission Control and the Drive-By Truckers' Brighter Than Creation's Dark. Also, Atlanta band The Selmanaires have just released another excellent CD, Throw in local bands the Black Lips, Manchester Orchestra and Dead Confederate, and it's a really great time for rock in the Atlanta area.

— In sports we demand excellence, rings, etc. Many among us become peeved at anything short of a title or the No. 1 position. And yet in so much of our pop culture, so many Americans are happy to accept, again and again, vapid mediocrity (or worse) and pure hype. Two words: American Idol.

— And one more entry in my I-just-don't-get-these-times file: In this week's issue of Sports Illustrated, in the Pop Culture Grid on page 27, one of four athletes surveyed is Cleveland Cavaliers guard Daniel Gibson.

Opinion: Romo is pulling his late fade again

Here's Tony's stop-the-presses moment: He ain't none of them, yet.

It wouldn't be Dallas if there wasn't a soap opera involved, which is why Sunday's playoff game against the Giants is only part of the ongoing Cowboys storyline.

Romo's much-debated weekend trip to Mexico, where he was photographed by paparazzi while frolicking on the beach with girlfriend Jessica Simpson, stole the headlines Monday and Tuesday. Romo, however, remains unfazed by all the controversy surrounding him.

“I know what I needed to get myself in a position to hopefully be successful," Romo said during his normal Wednesday visit with the media. "You know, people asking for tickets, media requests, all these things during the weekend — I was able to put the phone aside and get myself ready and watch some football for two straight days.

2006 Miss Monette Manor crowned

Staff and family members worked together with residents at Monette Manor in preparation for the Beauty Pageant held Wednesday, Aug. 9. Fourteen beautiful women competed for the title of Miss Monette Manor. Wendy Carpenter, emcee, introduced each contestant. A brief biography of each one was shared. The contestants had the opportunity to share a story or a lifetime accomplishment.

Judges, Tracy Routon, Renee Uthoff and Delois Kielhorn, all agreed it was a difficult decision as all of the women were special.

Contestants included Thelma M. Marret, Imogene Southard, Addie Malone, Maxine Rowley, Gladys Whitehead, Linda Bailey, Mildred Snider, Glendola Minyard, Daphne Reed, Sharon Wilson, Nellie Woodard, Norene Whiteaker, Audena Maupin, and Mary Jo Golden.

Microsoft, the sleeping giant, wakes again

Yahoo's board of directors has decided to reject the offer, a person familiar with the matter said Saturday. The person, who is close to Yahoo management, said the company planned to tell Microsoft in a letter Monday that the deal undervalues the Internet company and fails to offset its risk if regulators were to overturn the merger.

Although Yahoo doesn't want to sell to Microsoft, it has few alternatives. Many analysts expect Microsoft to sweeten its offer, and Yahoo to accept it.

If it wins Yahoo, the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant will have pulled off by far the largest acquisition in its 33-year history to try to keep Google from getting further ahead.

"Microsoft tends to be a reactive company," said Mark Anderson, an entrepreneur and author of an industry newsletter that counts Gates and Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer among its subscribers.

Get ready for more mystery in new season of 'Lost'

The next step in the rescue plan was for the group to make a trek to the radio tower and shut off a tape-loop rescue plea that also was interfering with any other transmissions.

Ben (Michael Emerson), the less-than-trustworthy overlord of the Others, implored Jack (Matthew Fox), the survivors' reluctant leader, not to place the call to the freighter people.

Jack sneered at Ben's words. The call was made, and the new episode began, much as last season's finale did, with Jack somewhere in the future — drinking. With this recently added flash-forward storytelling feature, Jack was seen in his Los Angeles kitchen mixing a morning cocktail when his eye fell on TV coverage of police in hot pursuit of a speeding motorist.

In a scene back on the island (and back in time), the portly Hurley (Jorge Garcia) runs into Locke (Terry O'Quinn), who long ago had "gone native" and has no desire to ever leave the island.
